Volker Bredler is part of the arcneo team and has over 40 years of experience in project development. His four decades at Aldi Süd have shaped him not only professionally but also personally: responsibility, clear principles, and a reliable value compass characterize his working style to this day.
His wealth of experience includes the construction of a logistics center on the A5, over 90 new Aldi Süd store constructions, and more than 60 renovations, as well as numerous other commercial properties. Today, with BREDLER Projektentwicklung, he dedicates himself to complex projects, including the extensive district development "Werkstadt Betzdorf".
As the responsible head for the structured planning and implementation of our projects, he plays a central role at arcneo. However, his professional path began quite differently – as a trained freight forwarder. In our interview format, we would like to present his exciting career – and give our clients and partners the opportunity to get to know him personally.
Mr. Bredler, how did you come to your profession as a project developer?
I grew up in Offenbach in modest circumstances. After school, I completed training as a freight forwarding agent, which provided a solid commercial foundation. Later on, I pursued a degree in business administration.
In 1981, I came across a job advertisement from Aldi Süd—they were looking for regional sales managers. The position was attractive, offering significant responsibility and prospects. Six weeks after my application, I received the telegram with the acceptance—I took the job.
At Aldi, you start in a classic market setting, take on early responsibility for branches and staff, and get to know the assortment in detail. If you prove yourself, you are given new tasks. That was the case for me too: I eventually took over the management of branch development in Montabaur and was granted procuration—a role I held for decades.
Initially, I had no experience in project development, but Aldi provided me with the necessary tools. A strong willingness to learn and the ability to take responsibility were important. In retrospect, it was not a classic career path—but one that significantly shaped me both professionally and personally.
How did the establishment of BREDLER Project Development come about, and what types of projects do you manage today?
I would have retired regularly in August 2021, but there were still tasks at Aldi that I worked on until April 2022. At that time, a business partner approached me with a larger project. This led to the 'Werkstadt Betzdorf,' which I am overseeing as a project manager. This involves urban district development on more than 50,000 square meters. The main pillars of the project are health, care, shopping, and living.
Meanwhile, I am also managing several other projects. New assignments often arise through my network. It is only possible for me to dedicate the necessary work time because my wife supports me in the background. Without her, I would not be able to undertake all these tasks.
What qualities do you think make a good project developer?
Alongside hard work, reliability, and professional accuracy, it is primarily the human values in collaboration that make a long-term difference.
Understanding, honesty, and authenticity are the central values for me. Being understanding means, above all, treating others with respect—especially in the interpersonal area. I am convinced that projects succeed when one works reliably with all parties involved as equals. This creates trust and a motivated work environment.
I often went back to the office in the evening to approve invoices—so that the money would reach contractors and partners on time. For me, this was a sign of appreciation for the efforts they had made. This attitude was recognized—and has led to a reliable and strong network in the long run.
Why did you decide to participate in arcneo?
arcneo is something independent for me – not a standard project, but an initiative that tackles socially relevant issues. Unlike many classic projects, this is not just about structured acceleration, support, or optimization, but about truly creating something new.
What particularly convinced me was the focus on the issue of housing in old age. Seniors are an essential part of our society – and many will face financial challenges during retirement. If we do not find answers here, social tension will arise. With arcneo, we can create early solutions that work – economically and socially.
I like that I can meaningfully contribute my experience here. It is an opportunity to be involved in something that has an impact beyond the individual project.

Where do you see arcneo in five years?
I see three clear pillars at arcneo: First, a scalable concept for housing in the general housing market—especially in the commuter belts of the top 7 cities, where we can achieve affordable square meter prices through modular construction and innovative financing. Close collaboration with municipalities will be a crucial success factor here.
Secondly, the topic of senior housing: age-appropriate, affordable apartments near medical care that enable independent living—often complemented by mobile services.
And thirdly, boarding houses: flexible housing options for employees from nursing and care facilities, but also for people looking for temporary accommodation.
These three areas can be represented with our concept—and they will gain even more societal relevance. If we implement these topics reliably, affordably, in good quality, and with faster construction timelines, I am convinced that our concept can be successfully realized.
